"Pattern Making...An Art Revived!"
Cut out a garment and sew it up. It fits perfectly,
yet it was never altered, adjusted, or tried on until the last stitch was
sewn. Sound like an impossible dream? Not at all!! You've just
witnessed a garment made using the Oriental method of pattern making.
As a former student of the Oriental method of pattern
making (and now an author and teacher of the Oriental method of pattern making)
I can attest to the accuracy and perfect fit of the garments made by this
method.
Pattern making is a course taken very seriously by the
Oriental people. For those who want to sew for their families, there is no
other way, because patterns that we can buy at a any fabric store are not available
there. It is to their benefit that patterns are not available, because we
all know that it is the rare person who does not have to alter commercial
patterns before they can even start to cut the garment and sew.
The advantage of pattern making is that you are using YOUR
measurements for the patterns and not an "average" set of measurements
used by the pattern companies. You start out by taking 22 measurements -
yours if you're sewing for yourself, or the measurements of whomever you plan to
sew for. These measurements are the basis for every garment you make and
the garment has no choice but to fit you because you've used YOUR measurements
to make the pattern.
Whatever figure problems you may have - a high hip, sway
back, rounded shoulders, etc., are taken into account when the measurements are
taken. It makes no difference whether you're tall or short, very thin or
heavy set, or if you are large busted in comparison to the rest of your body, or
have larger than average hips and legs - pattern making will solve your
problems.
Pattern making is not difficult to learn. Just as
you would follow a new recipe step by step to make a dessert or casserole, you
also learn pattern making one step at a time. You make one garment, then
make changes to the garment for various styles in the same manner as the
Oriental girls are taught in pattern making schools, then you progress on to the
other items.
